My Role

Jomari’s Journey is one of four temporary murals sited along construction fencing associated with the construction of the headworks facility of the Southeast Treatment Plant. Four artists were selected to create a mural, each of which would be in-place for a year. To ensure the artworks resonated with community members we incorporated a new selection strategy. In their proposals, we asked artists to tell us about their meaningful connection to the neighborhood. Further, we asked each artist to complete an authentic community engagement project during the creation of their mural. 

For Jomari’s Journey I built executive and project-team alignment, participated in artist selection, worked with the artist to establish site and project context, and provided creative review and approval throughout the development of the artwork.

The Artwork

Nancy Cato’s mural Jomari’s Journey tells the story of Jamari, a young child who is frustrated with the oppressive forces around him—pollution, violence, gentrification, and displacement. To escape these injustices, Jamari creates a portal to the Universe, where he can breathe and find serenity. When called home by his mother, Jamari, who now embodies the Universe, brings this new-found inner peace with him.
