My Role

Navigating the Historical Present: Bayview-Hunters Point is the literal and figurative backdrop for hundreds of community events held each year in the Alex Pitcher room at the Southeast Community Center. The artwork draws some inspiration from the Shades of Bayview photo archive at the San Francisco Public Library and is one of 40 artworks by 30 artists at the Center. 

The artworks for the Southeast Community Center are of, by and for the Center. Together the artworks tell the story of the center, its history, mission and aspirations, to every visitor. For this artwork and others we thoughtfully facilitated conversations with community elders and stakeholders, as well as shared our findings from the Bayview Arts Masterplan we drafted.

For this and all of the artworks at the center, I built executive and project-team alignment, participated in artist selection, worked with the artist to establish site and project context, and provided creative review and approval throughout the development of the artwork.

The Artwork

Navigating the Historical Present: Bayview-Hunters Point by Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle located in the Alex Pitcher room of the Southeast Community Center provides, literally, the backdrop for countless community events. In this artwork the artist washes family photographs in blue watercolor in the same way that the center wraps the stories of community into the building itself.
